Ask The Winemaker // 2006 Grande Reserve
Patrick of Coonawawarra // 2006 Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvigon
What would a fair price be for this and when would you suggest it to be at peak drinking ?
"Firstly, our current release is 2010 Grande Reserve that has a cellar door price of $125 a bottle. The 2006 is certainly a great year and we have RRP in cellar door of $150 per bottle. We only have a very limited amount here to sell so it is great that you have one to try already.
Personally, I would say that this wine is made to be cellared for at least 10 years and can easily go upwards of 20. In saying that I like my Grande Reserve to be around the 10 – 12 year old mark before I drink it. This gives enough time for the tannins to really soften and integrate with the wine developing some leathery, cigar box aged characters that I love in Coonawarra Cabernet. The balance of fruit and secondary aged characters is prefect for me around the 10-12 year old mark.
I would generally say if you like more fruit, then drink it younger, but if you like aged Cabernet then this will live on for many years.
If there is anything else, I can help you with, please let me know.
Once you do try it, let me know how you like it. "
