2006 Grande Reserve makes headlines at International Cabernet Competition!
MEDIA RELEASE: Grand accolade for Patrick’s Grande Reserve Cabernet
It’s official! Patrick of Coonawarra’s 2006 Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is among the world’s best reds. The wine dubbed the ‘true essence of Coonawarra’ has been awarded the highly coveted maximum 5 stars inone of the world’s largest and most influential cabernet tasting line-ups, keeping company with powerhouse French label Chateau Mouton Rothschild ($2,270.00/bottle) and Chateau Latour Premier Grand Cru ($1585).
Judges of Winestate Magazine’s International Cabernet & Bordeaux Blends tasting declared Patrick of Coonawarra’s flagship wine “very compelling”, applauding the “lovely intense hit of varietal fruit aromas” lifting out of the glass. “The palate has (also) aged beautifully and is soft and long and fills the mouth with more of those intense varietal fruit characters,” said Winestate’s Joy Walterfang.
The Grande Reserve was one of only five wines entered from around the globe to score five stars in the top 5 “Cabernet and Blends $100+” category. At $125 per bottle, Winestate’s Peter Jackson said it is considerably more affordable than all but one of its competitors. “It’s sensational value for money,” he said.
Coonawarra’s chief winemaker, Luke Tocaciu said the accolade is a wonderful tribute to his late father and winery founder, Patrick Tocaciu, who poured more than four decades of passion into the 2006 vintage.“It is a wine that is selected from the best parcel of fruit from our Home Block vineyard and only released in the best years, and it is a wine that my Father was really proud of,” he said. “He set out to make the best example of Coonawarra cabernet that can be found – and therefore, a cabernet that would be among the world’s best – and this accolade confirms that the Grande Reserve is achieving this aim.”
Mr Tocaciu said 40 months of maturation in 100% new, tightly-grained French oak followed by four years of bottle age before release enhances complex and rich notes of mint, tobacco, liquorice and dark fruits and ensures that the ‘06 wine is drinking at its best. “It is great to see that the time, effort and patience that goes into this wine is being recognised,” he said. “2006 was a cooler year in Coonawarra, making this wine the classic, elegant style with excellent cellaring potential that has made the Coonawarra region famous.”
Award-winning wine writers Tyson Stelzer, Mike Bennie and Huon Hooke have also heaped praise on the 2006 Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, awarding it 95 points:
“The big gun from Patrick, gift-boxed and released with extra bottle age. Three years in oak, four in bottle. It's a cabernet of great structure and length with a lot of savoury, oak-matured characters. Tremendous intensity and length on the palate. Smooth, supple, gently mellowed tannins. A delicious wine of a savoury rather than fruit-driven style.” – Huon Hooke
“This is a fancy-feeling wine – deeply coloured, rich and ripe and cedary in perfume, rolls across the palate in waves of fleshy fruit and molten tannin. It’s decidedly bold and powerful, but doesn’t forget an element of drinkability. Impressive for style.” – Mike Bennie
Patrick of Coonawarra’s 2006 Grande Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon features on the front cover of Winestate’s new issue, which goes on sale tomorrow (July 1st).
